A Chat with Theatre School Instructor (and Cool Guy) – Ryan!
The winter session of theatre school is just around the corner and registrations are pouring in! In anticipation we would like to introduce Carousel Theatre’s newest theatre school instructor ‘Cool Guy Ry’ aka Ryan Anderson. Ryan started with Carousel in the fall and we’ve loved having him!
How long have you been an instructor at Carousel Theatre and what classes do you instruct? Have you ever instructed anywhere else?
I began teaching theatre just after I graduated Bishop’s University in 2004. I taught and performed for children in Lennoxville, Quebec with a company called Theatre Expansion.
Then, with assistance from my wife, Lyndsay, I led my own spring break theatre camps in Middlebury Vermont. After moving out to BC, I taught theatre through the City of Burnaby’s Creative Drama programs.
This past September, I began teaching at Carousel. Theatre Journeys 7-9, Acting Adventures 10-12.
What’s your favourite thing about instructing theatre school?
Watching the kids grow as actors and as people.
I understand you were in a Carousel Theatre show once. Can you tell me a bit about that?
Yes, I toured The Big League with Carousel. It was a hockey show dealing with themes including peer pressure, parental pressures, girls in hockey and sportsmanship, to name a few. The play was performed mostly on rollerblades which was very exciting for me because of the fact that I grew up playing hockey and I love sports. We performed the show in school gyms and theatres virtually everywhere in BC, and also Alberta and Ontario.
What’s your favourite story by Dr. Suess?
The Grinch (along with Rudolph, Charlie Brown, Frosty, A Christmas Carol, and It’s a Wonderful Life) has always been a story I must watch every Christmas season. I love it. I also read The Lorax recently and it really struck a chord with me. Very powerful messages.
Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?
My wife and I have a five month old baby named Violet.
I like to play guitar and sing.
I am a Toronto Raptors fan.
