“What’s a ‘Teen Shakespeare Program’?!“
The Teen Shakespeare Program is an intensive six week program for teens ages 13 to 17 years from July 2 until August 11, 2012. Teen actors are led through a four week rehearsal process of the full length Shakespeare play, and the program culminates in a full production for the public.
This year the teen actors take on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which will be a magical adventure at Performance Works Outdoor Stage on Granville Island. The wooden outdoor stage at Ron Basford Park (the Teen Shakespeare Program’s home for 20+ years) will be transformed into a remote island setting, where the exiled duke Prospero, a magician, plans to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place at court. With his slave Caliban and the sprite Ariel, he creates a tempest which brings to the island his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit Alonso, King of Naples.
Shakespeare’s magical adventure will be performed by an ensemble of teen actors from across Metro Vancouver and Victoria.
