Something is Blooming in the Theatre of Carousel!
I am not speaking of blooming flowers, (although there is a lovely garden at the office!) rather, I am speaking of the seeds of production. Ah yes, the seeds of production have been planted here at Carousel Theatre as the team prepares for yet another summer of learning, exploration, imagination, and SHAKESPEARE!
This year, the Teen Shakespeare Program is putting on the classic play Hamlet. Under the direction of two time Jessie-award winner Carole Higgins, fifteen young people (ages 13-17) will bring the tragic tale of the Danish princess to life. Yes, you read that correctly: princess. This steam-punk version of Hamlet has a twist; all of the major roles are gender-reversed! The show runs July 26-August 10. Admission is FREE but reserved seating can be booked in advance for $5 per seat. (Call 604-669-3410)
Although rehearsals begin in July, things are already in full swing down at the office! Costumes are being sewn, props are being organized, and the set is being designed. Altogether, the atmosphere is one of happy anticipation and enthusiasm!
The start of putting on a production is always an exciting time because there are endless possibilities and so many opportunities to be creative! If you’ve ever been involved with a theatre production before, then you know the magical feeling I’m talking about. No one can be more excited than the young actors themselves however, as they eagerly count down the days to their first rehearsal. (The last Facebook update indicates it is a mere ten days away—our very own Seamus Fera has been diligently counting down the days for a few months!)
We hope that you are looking forward to the final product as much as we are! If you haven’t done so already, follow us on Twitter or ‘like’ us on Facebook! By doing so, you can stay tuned for more updates–including podcasts, behind the scenes, features, videos, and more!—as we begin this exciting journey of HAMLET!
